Irving celebrated the Big Read program with 42 events.

So how have city events been doing lately? Pretty well, according to the latest City of Irving Operations Update newsletter.

The city reports that about 6,000 people attended Canal Fest last month. The celebration of arts and various cultures took place along the Mandalay Canal in the Las Colinas Urban District.

The city’s fall carnivals were enjoyed by about 1,700 residents. Parks and Recreation hosts these carnivals every year at city recreation centers.

In library news, more than 560 residents attended a fall festival and haunted house as part of the ninth annual Big Read which celebrated To Kill a Mockingbird. The community read program included 42 events hosted at Irving libraries and partner locations, including at the National Scouting Museum which hosted a mock trial. In addition, 3,000 copies of To Kill a Mockingbird and Big Read companion titles were distributed to residents.

The library also hosted three author visits last month with about 470 guests in attendance. Those authors were Newberry award winner Christopher Paul Curtis; Neal Shusterman, author of Unwind; and a Fierce Reads Tour of young adult novelists Gennifer Albin (Unraveled), Nikki Kelly (Lailah), Jessica Brody (Unforgotten) and Marissa Meyer (The Lunar Chronicles).

Another event hosted by the library system was a Diwali Celebration at the Valley Ranch Library. About 500 guests attended the festival, which was sponsored by the Hindu American Association.

And congrats to the Code Enforcement Department for receiving a national award from the American Association of Code Enforcement. The award was for “Innovative Code Enforcement Techniques.”
